Social Saturday: Small Steps, Big Change

3 min read

Our very first Social Saturday happened yesterday and I think it was a beautiful success! It was an hour spent with a room full of special humans, listening, sharing, laughing and connecting - a really wholesome time together.

Our guest speaker was Bronwyn, who shared her incredibly honest and inspiring story of transformation.

As a teenager, Bronwyn developed a difficult relationship with food. She began using food as a way to cope, and over the years became obese. Eventually, her weight was affecting her mobility and her quality of life. She was in pain, struggled to move and needed help with basic everyday things. Nerve blockers brought their own complications.

Then came a turning point. On her 50th birthday, Bronwyn saw photographs of herself and she had a moment of realisation: she had lived more than half of her life, and something needed to change.

But she didn't overhaul her entire life overnight. She started with a short walk. Then, slowly, that walk became a little longer. And with every walk came a little more confidence. She began making her portion sizes smaller. The weight started to come down - not dramatically, but a couple of hundred grams at a time. Eventually, she felt brave enough to try moving with other people. First boxing, and eventually Pilates at Bodhi.

Six years and 52kg later, Bronwyn now helps other people change their mindset and make sustainable changes in their own lives. One of the messages she shares with her clients really stayed with me:

"You are someone worth taking care of."

So take the walk. Find the quiet time. Join the movement class. Make the choice that helps you feel a little better. And I loved that her approach isn't about one magic solution because health isn't only about food or exercise. It's about looking at the whole picture - nutrition, movement, mindset and our nervous system all play a role.

But my absolute favourite thing Bronwyn said was:

"You don't have to try hard, if you love yourself hard."

I think that one landed with a lot of people in the room. Because while Bronwyn's story is, on the surface, a story about weight loss, the lessons she shared are so much bigger than that. Whatever challenge you're facing - whether it's your relationship with food, movement, stress, confidence, your health, or simply feeling a little stuck - you don't need to transform everything at once.

"You don't need to be perfect. You just need to be consistent."

So perhaps take a moment today to think about something you're struggling with.

And ask yourself: What is one small thing I could do consistently, every day, that would show myself that I love and care for me?

Maybe it's a 10-minute walk.

Maybe it's putting your phone away and sitting quietly for five minutes.

Maybe it's nourishing yourself properly.

Maybe it's moving your body.

Maybe it's finally asking for some help.

And you don't have to do it alone. Find a friend. A loved one. A community. A coach. Someone who can walk alongside you and remind you that you are worth the effort. That, really, is what I hope Social Saturday becomes - a place where we can make meaningful connections, feel supported, and remember that we're not meant to navigate all of this on our own.

A huge thank you to Bronwyn for being so open and generous with her story, and to everyone who came along and made our first Social Saturday so special. 🤍
